netmask - НЕ проблема, так и должно работать. С eth0 это никак не
связано. Причина, по которой это происходит - соединение Point-to-Point,
в котором могут участвовать только 2 клиента, на их сеть и маска
соответствующая накладывается.

Снова сделайте все по HOWTO и дайте сюда вывод команды route в момент,
когда клиент на линии. Следует также проверить наличие опции
FORWARD=TRUE в /etc/sysconfig/network.
