У меня такое было, когда я файерволлом прикрыл сервер со стороны ЛВС.
Сервер начинает общаться с почтовыми клиентами по ident. Посмотрите,
какие пакеты бегают в сети при заборе почты и отключенном файерволле.
Сейчас уже не вспомню точнее - конфиги далеко :(
Если надо - найду, но там все просто.
