Покажите вывод ifconfig ppp0 при установленном модемном соединении.
У меня когда-то была проблема, которая заключалась в том, что
после дозвона IP-адрес интерфейса был не тот, который выданный
провайдером, а тот же, что и у eth0. Всё лечилось отключением eth0.
Может у Вас та же ситуация?
