А это уже хаки, которые будут автоматом вынесены при обновлении системы.

Это пишется в /etc/modprobe.d/options как
options ath_pci autocreate=ap

Его НЕ НАДО там прописывать. lspci -v Вам показывает - какие драйвера и в каком порядке будут пробоваться.
ath_pci - в списке есть и в случае запрета на ath5k будет загружен автоматом. Зачем его грузить принудительно.
