Прежде чем пробовать верните в нормальное состояние ath5k и добавте его в
blacklist. Добейтесь загрузки ath_pci без ругани в логах и работы iwlist
scan.

есть пример конфигурирования Атероса в режиме - отличном от managed.
Проблема в том, что скрипт в ifup-wireless wlanconfig вызываемый с параметром
mode, отличным от заданного в autocreate ругается на IOCTL (видимо ошибка в
madwifi). Таким образом без специальноых костылей атероса в режиме, отличном
от станционного - не завести.
В приведенном примере вызов етцнетовского ifup-wireless обходится с помощью
CONFIG_WIRELESS=no
а устройство настраивается в /etc/net/ifaces/ath0/ifup-post ( скрипт с правами
755 )
Пробуйте.
Кстати, в Вашем случае, туда можно добавить и команды настройки адреса... но
должно работать без них.
