Потому что с этой опцией слишком много проблем для разумности
такого умолчания и по сей день. И с драйверами, и с приложениями.

Просто недоделано. В принципе, сейчас некоторая часть
alterator-x11 уже доведена до нужной формы, хотя и по другой
причине. :)
