"В десктопе" пакет не обновится, поскольку десктоп зафиксирован
в момент выпуска. Обновиться может что-либо в updates, которые
для 4.0 общие, и в бранче, который также общий.

Разумеется. Поскольку изложенная Вами ситуация по моему опыту
является сугубо теоретической, это разумно.
