Если и заведёте -- будет притормаживать, поскольку всё на
процессоре. Кажется, какими-то шаманствами как раз в OpenOffice
и Mozilla оно включалось (выставлением переменных окружения,
включавших слово XFT -- точнее уже не помню).

Своё. Вот в OOo тоже могло быть своё (как и в SO).

Да, и сильно -- там AFAIH сглаженный растр кэшировался, за счёт
чего падение производительности в основном касалось первого
использования шрифта/размера. В XFree86/XOrg такого не знаю.

На прошлой, кажется, неделе на чипсах заводили ноут p166mmx.
Вроде без эксцессов обошлось. Master 2.4.
