Благодарю! Вот где, похоже, была собака зарыта!
У меня были установлены aspell, aspell-ispell и aspell-ru-lebedev.
А ispell установлен не был.
После того, как я удалила aspell-ispell и поставила ispell и
ispell-ru-lebedev, проблема исчезла.
Теперь при открытии в Emacs теховских файлов проблем с ними не
наблюдается.
