А, ну да, ещё modprobe sd_mod надо.
В новой версии уже забито в /etc/modules.conf (точнее, на самом деле в
/etc/modutils.d/hotplug - но в той версии modutils этот каталог ещё не
использовался):
above usb-storage sd_mod
