На snd-intel8x0 вроде такой ругани, как на snd-via82xx, не было...
Могу посоветовать только покрутить alsamixer - проверьте, что
искажения не возникают из-за завышенных уровней (например,
попробуйте понизить уровень PCM и поднять громкость через Master или
регулятором на колонках, или наоборот). Да, кстати, в xmms в
эквалайзере есть регулятор Preamp (слева) - его задирать не
рекомендуется.
Ещё проверьте, что в alsamixer не включена какая-нибудь 3D-чушь для
звука (хотя это маловероятно - разве что раньше крутили и забыли).
