Для изучающих Linux --- да. А для работающих с ним --- нет. Не
отходя далеко от темы LyX: брать и компилять тарбол есть смысл
только после того, как:
1) Имеющаяся в дистрибутиве версия не заработала или не устроила.
2) Имеющаяся в Сизифе компилённая версия не встала.
3) Имеющийся в Сизифе же src.rpm не скомпилялся или, опять же, не
заработал, или, снова опять, не устроил.
Сизифовые версии, за редчайшими исключениями достаточно новые, и
ставить вместо них что-то "абсолютно новое" из тарбола есть смысл
только в случаях каких-то непоняток. И потом, не надо всё-таки
забывать, что поставленный из тарбола софт выпадает из-под
наблюдения системы контроля зависимостей. Что чревато.

И в каком месте расширяют кругозор три общеизвестные строчки,
которые можно прочитать в _любом_ тексте про установку программ
под Linux? :-))
