У меня такая же видеокарта. Я обновил XFree86 до версии 4.3 из Сизифа.
И все заработало.
Есть другой способ - поставить драйвер от ATI (пакет fglrx)
apt-cache search fglrx

"Полуанглийское" меню где? В KDE, наверное.
Вообще для Linux предпочтительной русской локалью является именно KOI8-R.
Если выбрать CP1251, то возможны другие проблемы...

src.rpm - это пакет с исходниками. Для его сборки нужны компилятор и пакет
rpm-build, которые есть на диске со средствами разработки.
Так что придется подождать этот диск, и установить по крайней мере пакеты
gcc2.96 и rpm-build
.
