На самом деле бороться с панелью всё-таки можно - точнее, можно
сменить для неё шрифт на более мелкий. Делается это записью в ~/.gtkrc
(или ~/.gtkrc.mine, если в ~/.gtkrc переключаются темы) следующего
текста:

fontset = "-adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal--10-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-*,\
-*-helvetica-medium-r-normal--10-*-*-*-*-*-*-*,\

Так в 1024x768 она на экран влезает даже с текстовыми подписями.
