Сам на это когда-то налетел, потому что в мане про это не написано.
В /etc/crontab формат строки такой:
x1 x2 x3 x4 x5 user script.
Ключевое слово - user, от которого script запускается. Пока я там не
поставил root, тоже ничено не было.
