Потому, что поднимается, по сути ppp поверх eth для авторизации.

Скорее всего вот тут. Поставьте правильный route. После подъёма
ppp0 у вас появляется ещё один IP адрес и route должен указывать
на тот remote IP adress, который появляется в логах при
соединении.
Кстати, если бы вы привели логи, то ответить было бы проще и не
пришлось бы гадать. Но, тем не менее, скорее всего проблема
именно в этом.
