А так. Я сегодня тоже впервые ставил MySQL.
Насколько я понял пароли для MySQL не имеют никакого отношения к /etc/passwd

У меня тоже самое. %-(
А если оставить skip-networking, тогда:
Failed to connect to database! Error: Can't connect to MySQL server on '127.0.0.1' (111)
Система Spring2001 со всеми updates...
