А при работе мешает? При установке ищутся всякие устройства вроде Zip на
параллельном порте, видимо, у Вас принтер какой-то странный, раз на это
реагирует.

Это случайно не предупреждение о приходе новой почты? У меня, правда,
пикает реже - каждый день. :-)
Посмотрите в почтовый ящик - может, что-то из cron.hourly не работает и
посылает письма с сообщением об ошибке.
