Без перекомпиляции не ставил, лучше пересобери, VMWare любит
проругаться на всякие разности и гадости. IMHO проще полчаса потратить на
сборку, чем через ...надцать дней найти решение проблемы и напороться на
новые грабли коих там много (я например так и не смог со стороны линукса поднять
сетку с работающими самбовскими шарами хотя это не критично, поскольку
есть возможность средствами VMWare Tools создать разделяемое дисковое
пространство).
Кстати, кто-нибудь может объяснить проблему: при сборке ядра (2.4.21
если важно)из спортивного интереса включил в ядро (не модуль)только TCP/IP networking,
поскольку на домашнем компьютере и-нета не предвидится. В результате в /lib/`uname -r`/net/
появился модуль dummy.o. Система работает, но VMWare при сборке своих
сетевых модулей и т.п. вываливается с руганью на этот модуль да еще
при загрузке insmod честно пытается его загрузить, но не может.
Странно, учитывая что lo поднимается если верить сообщениям при
загрузке.
