alsa - это набор средств поддержки устройств вывода звука. если
поставлено, то исходники лежат в /usr/src/linux/alsa...
Обычно набор устройств, поддерживаемых alsa, несколько больше, чем
тех, которые поддерживает ядро. Имеет смысл использовать, если
средствами ядра звук поддержать не получается. У меня, например, по
тем же MDK7.0 не поднялась звуковуха с одним из кристалловских чипов
(за давностью лет не помню номер). Через alsa карточка работала.
Инструкции по пользованию лежат в README и INSTALL каталога алсы.
