Спрашивая статус мы получаем общий статус системы. Типа вот такого:
[root@tiger root]# service vmware status
vmnet-bridge is running
vmnet-dhcpd is running
vmnet-netifup is running
Module vmmon installed
Module vmnet installed
Автор темы в самом начале сказал что ему удалось запустить приложение
vmware и установить windows. Отсюда вывод что vmmon и vmnet уже
загружены. А вот остальные куски системы типа vmnet-bridge и vmnet-dhcpd
могут быть не запущены.

Не факт что реальный интерфейс на машине не работает. В первоначальном
письме об это не сказано ни слова. Проблема может быть в том что в для
интерфейса /dev/vmnet0 при первоначальном конфигурировании выбраны
кривые настройки.
